Mangrove Green Infrastrucutre

REM Reforestation of fringe mangrove shoreline establishes green infrastructure for storm-water control and to reduce erosion from waves as-well-as the damaging effects of upland runoff. Wave reflection is also buffered, which reduces water turbidity promoting the health of submerged aquatic vegetation an essential habitat for fish and crustaceans. Fringing mangroves that extend into the intertidal zone also provide a unique habitat for roosting and nesting water birds.

Our work in Ecological Engineering supports coastal ecosystems that provide Multifunctional Green Infrastructure (MGI) to areas of urban and commercial development. In congested coastal centers, the marginal engineered habitat of today can rapidly become critical habitat of the future that is necessary to maintain a balance between these population centers and native species. Subsequently, Engineered MGI continues to provide a wide range of environmental and quality of life benefits for local communities.
